Penny Policy at Wedge Community Co-ops

What is Happening?

Starting Wednesday, January 21, Wedge Co-ops will stop giving out pennies as change. If you pay with cash, your change will be rounded to the nearest nickel in your favor.

why are we making this change?

In November 2025, the US Mint stopped producing pennies. While pennies remain legal tender, banks can no longer supply enough pennies to use in our registers.

what does this mean for you?

  • You will no longer receive pennies in your change
  • Your change is always rounded in your favor
  • Prices of items do not change
  • Sales tax does not change
  • Paying with card, gift card, EBT, or check is not affected
  • You can pay using pennies if you have them

example

If your total is $9.88 and you pay with $10.00 cash, your change would normally be 12 cents. Since we no longer use pennies, your change will be rounded to 15 cents, so you get a little more back.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

what if i pay with credit, debit, EBT, gift card, or check?

You will pay the exact amount. There will be no rounding in your transaction.

what if i pay with exact change?

There will be no rounding in your transaction.

What if my total ends with a 5 or 0?

There will be no rounding in your transaction.

what if i use pennies to pay for my item(s)?

Despite not being minted, pennies are legal tender and we will accept them for payment. With nearly three billion pennies in circulation, we expect customers will be paying with them for a while.

how long will this last?

Since it is unlikely that the US Mint will resume production of pennies, we expect this to be a permanent change.

what will i see on my receipt?

If you paid with cash, you will see a small line that says, “Cash Change Adjustment.” This shows the amount we rounded so that your change comes out to the nearest nickel in your favor.
